February 10-12, 2010 - Ups & Downs

Wednesday and Thursday were reasonably good days. On Friday, Dad was not as engaged or responsive.
  • Dad's vital signs remain stable, and his blood work and other labs look good.
  • Mom and Becky were snowed in at their hotel on Wednesday and weren't able to visit. They used the time to rest, and Mom used some of the time to organize the many cards and letters that Dad has received - a scrap book of sorts. Your correspondence is uplifting and much appreciated by all.

  • The nurses reported that Dad was awake most of the day.
  • His mood seemed brighter on Thursday. Calls from friends and relatives really brightened him up and added to an already better day.
  • The therapist tested his swallow with some thickened liquid. At first, it looked like he passed the test, but later on it was determined that he hadn't. Still, I imagine having something by mouth must have been a welcome change for Dad.
  • He was asleep much of the day Friday, but was alert long enough for the respiratory therapist to put the speaking valve on for a short time. Dad didn't have much to say, but after the therapist left the room Mom asked Dad if he was awake. He replied, "I think so."
  • Later in the afternoon, they downsized Dad's trach from a size 8 to a size 6. The smaller passageway is supposed to make speech easier and is a step in the respiratory weaning process.
  • The smaller size resulted in some distressed breathing, especially while Dad was being turned. Once back on the ventilator, his breathing settled down and he rested more comfortably.
  • Sons John and Mike will be in Latrobe for visits this weekend.
Please continue to pray for Dad's complete recovery, as well as for strength and peace for Dad and Mom through this process. It can't be said enough - Thank you for your diligent prayers and warm wishes.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.
Romans 12:12 (NIV)

  1. Miles and Noodie,

We think of you and send you our thoughts and prayers each day. As Jim said, Keep up the metal. It certainly takes strength, courage, and a strong heart to persist during the ups and downs.

Healing, like Spring comes slowly. This very real and difficult winter seems to just keep throwing out snow. Yet each year the bulbs pop up through the snow and bloom once more. It will happen and relatively soon!

    With kindes regards, Scottie
