March 24, 2010 - Still in TICU

Wednesday, the 24th, was a reasonably quiet day. Dad was dealing with post-op pain and discomfort, and the pain medications kept him pretty groggy.
  • He was taken off the ventilator around midnight (about 13-14 hours after his surgery) and was back to oxygen support through the trach mask. He had a productive cough much of the day, although it improved as the day went on. The doctors said that his chest x-ray did not reveal anything of concern.
  • Vital signs were OK. Heart rate and respiration rate (breaths per minute) were within normal ranges, but higher than I have observed previously. In general, his breathing seemed to be somewhat of a struggle.
  • Dad had his PMV (speaking valve) on during our afternoon, but had little to say and was not in good humor.
  • Late in the afternoon, the medical staff determined that he it was best to keep the PMV off to allow him to breath easier. The plan was to keep him off the ventilator all night.
  • Dad's doctor is having the nutrition staff look at his dietary regimen. The doctors are seeking an increase in Dad's protein level. This was an issue addressed shortly after arrival at Presby and while Dad has not been losing ground, neither has he gained ground.
  • We're still not sure how long he will be in the TICU.
Thanks, as always, for your prayers, kindness and loving support. We are truly grateful. Please continue to pray for Dad's complete recovery. In particular, pray that he will have peace of mind about his circumstances. Also, pray for strength and peace for Mom and Dad throughout this ordeal.

  1. Tell Miles I'm looking forward to his next smart ass retort to one of my feeble witticisms.
Ask him if he recalls 7-8 years ago our Forest Festival late night attempt to get a drink at C J Maggie's. Both of us in our 60s and neither of us had ID. Bar maid wouldn't serve us alcohol, so I ordered two chocolate rickies (sic) (also sick), a la 1950s Neale's Drug Store.
Shortly after delivery of the rickies, I discovered Miles had somehow scored two vodka tonics. So we traded one of each.
As I recall, a chocolate vodka tonic ricky wasn't all that bad.
Get well, Miles. More exotic drinks await.
    Love and fervent prayers,

    Terry
