March 3 & 4, 2010 - Happy Birthday, John

Dad had a restful, quiet day Wednesday - son John's birthday. Happy Birthday, John!
  • Vital signs and stats were steady and strong. He was off the ventilator for about 14 hours total on Wednesday.
  • We are waiting for a bed to open up at Select Specialty Hospital at UPMC Montefiore.
  • This is very encouraging since it means that the vascular team has concluded that Dad won't need further surgery, and he can be discharged from the ICU.
  • Friend Ryan visited and they enjoyed a chat about the Lonesome Polecats and other stuff.
  • He spoke to son John on the phone. A birthday present to be sure.
  • Dad's caloric intake was increased, with a change to a different product. As he might say, "We've upped our calories, so up yours!"

Thursday got off to a quiet start and stayed that way. The highlight was Mom's return to the scene after a week-long break in Elkins.
  • Dad had a little pain med when the bandage on his left foot was changed. That kept him drowsy all morning and into the afternoon.
  • It looks like he will stay in the ICU at Presby over the weekend, since we're still waiting for a bed to open up at Select Specialty Hospital at UPMC Montefiore. If he has to wait, this is the best place to do it. Hopefully, a bed will become available in the next couple of days and we won't get forced in another direction. Please lift up that little matter in your prayers.
  • Dad enjoyed a visit from friends Alice and Joe from Elkins. Thanks again to them for taking the time to provide Mom's ride to Pittsburgh.
  • Medically, things look good, with vital signs and other indicators performing well. He spent about 16 hours off the ventilator.
  • Dad made the decision to grow out his beard. I know he's serious because he said it 2 days in a row.
  • Small problem, though, I failed to tell anyone that might need to know - like, maybe a nurse. So, he got a shave last night (he said it was more like a scraping). My bad, but nothing a few days won't fix - it's not like he has anything else to do but lay around and grow hair. Right?
As always, thank you for your prayers, warm thoughts, cards, letters, calls and other support and encouragement. Please continue to pray for Dad's complete recovery, as well as for strength and peace for Dad and Mom throughout this ordeal.
