- The problem was identified the evening of December 27th after Dad was admitted for observation at Davis Memorial Hospital.
- Dad went to the ER earlier that evening with chest pains. He allowed himself to be admitted, despite the protest that he didn't need to stay. It's a blessing to all of us that he did.
- The attending physician at Davis Memorial ordered a CT scan, which indicated what appeared to be an aortic aneurysm and the decision was made to transfer Dad to WVU Hospital immediately.
- At about 5:30 AM on the 28th, Dad was transferred by ambulance to WVUH.
- At about 8:30 AM, he went into surgery, with Dr. Jose L. Cruzzavala attending.
- Originally anticipated to last about 4 hours, the surgery was about 7-1/2 or 8 hours due to damage beyond the aortic dissection. The additional work that was required included repair of the carotid artery and replacement of the aortic valve, among other things.
- The surgery went well, all things considered.
- Due to swelling, his chest remained open for about 48 hours after surgery before it was closed.
- Significant risks of the surgery Dad had are stroke and blood clots, including small micro clots (sometimes referred to as shower emboli) that collect in the extremities. He is dealing with both issues.
- He was in the CCU (Cardiac Care Unit) at WVUH for 4 weeks before the transfer to the long-term acute care facility in Latrobe, PA. More about the transfer experience can be found here.
