A Sweet Story

On Thursday morning I noticed that Dad's stats on the monitor were aligned nicely, so I snapped a picture. Not sure what I had in mind at the time, but here it is...

His vital signs kind of hang in this range when he's off the ventilator and wired for sound (speaking valve on). So, later in the day I spoke to Mom while she was enroute to Pittsburgh. After we hung up, I told Dad that Mom would be here in about 30 minutes. He smiled and wondered out loud if he looked presentable. After telling him that I was sure he'd pass muster, I looked up and saw this...

His heart rate had gone up by 10-12 BPM and his breathing had picked up. I told him that it was one of the cutest things I've ever seen. He just stared, waiting for me to go on, but I pressed him by telling him that the correct response would be "What's that?" or ""What's so cute?" or something along those lines. After all, that's how a conversation works, right? So he grinned and played along. When I told him what was so cute, he smiled and simply said, "Really?"

I said, "Yeah Dad, she still makes your heart beat fast." He just kept smiling.

Maybe, just maybe, one of the sweetest things I've ever seen.

  1. Love the heart rate story!

Sat yesterday at the WVIAC tournament in the Charleston Civic Center behind Mike Bell, who played basketball at WV Tech and against and D&E in 58-59. He remembers Miles and thinks he may have seen him at the Charleston tournament in previous years. I could not validate that. Did Miles attend? The tourney moved from Buckhannon to Charleston after Miles graduated. It was neat to meet the guy. He knows Dana Helmick well, as Dana played football at Tech during those years. I'm still laughing over Miles' comment Tuesday after I'd thrown out "Us Chronologically Gifted Folks" that I was "going to work in all of them," meaning my witticisms repertoire. Then he said, "You didn't think I was paying attention, did you?" I sure as @#%$ know better than that.

    Love and prayers,

    Terry

  3. How Hello Miles,
Well, this is a fine mess you have gotten yourself into. Sue has been keeping us up to date on your progress so far but we decided to make this big jump into the world of blogs and read for ourselves. From all the info provided here ( and a job well done, I might say) it seems you are in the best of care, both medically and spiritually. With a wife and family like yours, what else could a man ask for? How true it is when you are hooked up to a heart monitor, there is no hiding the effects of a good kiss from the love of your life. Becky and I have chuckled several times thinking of your halloween antics. Keep up the good work and we will keep on the praying part. God Bless you,
    Becky and Mike Fresa
